Agenda

전통주라는 문화적 요소를 공간 속에 어떻게 담아낼 수 있을지에 대해 고민했다.

전통주의 인기가 국내외적으로 높아지고 있는 흐름 속에서도 전통주, 특히 막걸리를 자연스럽게 떠올리게 하는 공간은 여전히 부족하다. 맥주와 호프집, 사케와 이자카야처럼 술을 즐기기 위한 공간을 함께 연상할 수 있는 술과는 대조된다. 전통주를 담아낼 문화적 무대가 부족하다.

성수동에 전통주를 위한 무대를 만들 수 있을 것이다. 성수는 과거 공장의 이미지를 지니고 있으면서도 동시에 새로운 트렌드와 라이프스타일을 주도하는 실험실같은 지역이다. 관광객이 많고 다양한 문화가 뒤섞이는 이 지역은 양조장과 일상 공간이 자연스럽게 만나는 장면을 연출할 수 있으며, 전통주 문화 홍보에도 탁월한 효과를 기대할 수 있다.

이러한 분석을 바탕으로 성수동에 전통주를 경험할 수 있는 새로운 공간, 즉 “주막”의 현대적 해석을 제안한다. 조상들의 쉼과 교류의 장소였던 주막을 모티프로 삼고, 장독(항아리) 등 전통적 조형 요소를 디자인에 반영함으로써, 새로운 형태의 전통 음식 기반 F&B 공간을 만들고자 한다. 이를 통해 우리 술을 보다 자연스럽고 일상적인 문화 경험으로 확장시키는 데에 목적을 두었다.

I contemplated how to capture the cultural essence of traditional Korean liquor within a physical space.

Despite the rising popularity of traditional liquor both domestically and abroad, we still lack spaces that naturally evoke thoughts of these drinks-specifically Makgeolli- within contemporary trends. This stands in stark contrast to how we immediately associate beer with pubs or sake with izakayas. It highlights the absence of a cultural stage dedicated to traditional liquor.

Seongsu-dong offers the potential to create this very stage. Retaining its industrial heritage while serving as a “laboratory” for new trends and lifestyles, Seongsu is a hub where tourists and diverse cultures mingle. This environment allows for a natural intersection between the brewery and everyday life, making it an excellent location for promoting traditional liquor culture.

Based on this analysis, I propose a modern interpretation of the Jumak (traditional tavern) in Seongsu-dong. By adopting the *Jumak-*historically a place for rest and social exchange-as a motif and incorporating traditional sculptural elements like Jangdok (earthenware jars) into the design, I aim to create a new type of F&B space centered on traditional cuisine. Ultimately, the goal is to expand the appreciation of our liquor into a natural, everyday cultural experience.

성수동은 여전히 가동 중인 공장들이 있어 독특한 산업적 매력을 유지하고 있다. 전통주 양조장을 운영함으로써 성수주막은 이러한 생산적 지역 특성을 더욱 강화한다.

Industrial Facilities
Seongsu-dong still hosts active factories, giving the neighborhood a distinctive industrial charm. By operating a brewery for traditional spirits, Seongsu Jumak reinforces this production-focused character.
